THE TOUR

The adventure begins with a one-hour scenic drive from Panama City, crossing the Centennial Bridge and passing through the lush Soberanía National Park, a protected rainforest teeming with diverse wildlife. Upon arrival at the Gamboa dock, guests board a boat for a ride across Lake Gatun to Monkey Island, where they can observe a variety of primates, including capuchin, howler, and tamarin monkeys, in their natural habitat.

Monkeys may jump onto the boat, curious to inspect visitors and hoping you have some pieces of banana. Observe their behaviors up close as they swing between branches and interact with each other.

Meanwhile watch for crocodiles, turtles and exotic birds. This close-up wildlife experience offers a rare opportunity to witness these fascinating creatures as they interact and thrive in the rainforest environment. If it rains you get wet! The boat is covered but you should prepare for rain or shine.

After this immersive experience, the tour proceeds to the Summit shelter. See rescued wildlife, observe animals like jaguars, ocelots, toucans, sloths, and monkeys that are being rehabilitated.

Learn about conservation efforts, the shelter provides information about its work in protecting Panama’s wildlife. Visit Summit Municipal Park, the shelter is located within this park, which has botanical gardens and a small zoo featuring Panama’s national bird, the harpy eagle.

Photography and Nature Walks, enjoy the surrounding greenery and capture photos of the diverse flora and fauna. Educational Programs, if available, you might be able to join talks or guided tours by the shelter staff.
