Visit the Emberá Village
Visit the Emberá Village
THE TOUR
Your adventure begins when one of our expert guides picks you up from your city hotel. You’ll drive for about an hour through Chagres National Park and along the Panama Canal, with your guide sharing interesting information about Panama’s culture and history, as well as preparing you for your visit to the Emberá village.
In a traditional dugout canoe we cruise along the Chagres River and another jungle waterways. This scenic trip provides stunning views of Panama’s lush rainforest. If the weather allows it we will also go to the waterfall to cool off. After that we will follow our journey with the canoe and along the way, you will learn about the natural beauty of the region before arriving at the village. Once there, you’ll stretch your legs with a short walk around the community, giving you the opportunity to meet the Emberá tribe.
Visitors receive a warm welcome with traditional music. Known for their distinctive songs, dances, and costumes, the Emberá people have lived for centuries along rivers in Panama’s Darien region. During your 3-hour visit, you will explore the village, interact with local residents, and learn about their way of life. The Emberá share insights about their history, lifestyle, and spiritual beliefs. They demonstrate traditional activities such as basket weaving, tattoo art (with natural dyes), and the use of medicinal plants.
The experience includes a traditional meal featuring tilapia from the river, fried plantains, and fresh Panamanian fruits. After lunch, you’ll be treated to a traditional dance that showcases the Emberá’s deep relationship with nature.
Before leaving, you’ll have the chance to purchase traditional handicrafts made by the locals. Finally, you’ll canoe back down the river, then board the vehicle for your return trip to Panama City, arriving around 4:30pm, depending on traffic.
